Grand Theft Auto VI arrives on November 19, 2026, and a lot of the recent detail is about the two leads rather than the crimes. In IGN's full interview, published October 7, Rockstar North's Rob Nelson played about 30 minutes of the game and described how Jason and Lucia live between missions. We could not open IGN's transcript itself, so this summary relies on press coverage of it, linked below. Treat it as a description of a developer-led demo, not final release code.
The relationship is optional but it matters
Inven Global reports that spending time together, such as at the pool, playing mini golf, kayaking or robbing a bank, improves the relationship, while ignoring texts or calls can affect it. Nelson is quoted as saying, "It's not something that we want to foist upon players", and the relationship still shapes how the story plays out.
According to GTAVice, the activities that count as quality time include:
- Kayaking and walking on the beach
- Robbing places together
- Going to a zoo and studying animals
- Scuba diving and parachuting
You can also call or text each other at any time, including to ask the other to meet up. Replying, even briefly, maintains the relationship.
Story choices and the Criminal Profile
Nelson said story outcomes depend on both small and big choices: "The small ones add up to mean something". The coverage describes a Criminal Profile that tracks your style of play. It is separate from the relationship, and Inven Global reports that normal mission actions do not count against you. It shifts when you consistently go beyond what the story needs, and the world reacts to those consistent actions.
Each character has a routine
- Each protagonist has their own routine. When you switch characters, the other may be at the safehouse or somewhere else. In the demo, switching to Jason found him in the shower.
- Unscripted encounters exist. One example was a man living in a dumpster, who could be given pills, later offered legal advice, or joined in the dumpster.
- Safehouses are reported to be closer in design to Red Dead Redemption 2's camps. Hair can be cut or shaved there, and salons offer new styles.
Gyms, food and your personal vehicle
- Gyms build muscle and strength, and overeating causes weight gain.
- Going to the gym together trains both characters at once.
- Food gives a health buff.
- Your personal vehicle can be called at any time. It holds spare outfits and weapons you have bought.
Phone apps and getting around
- Ryde Me is the in-game rideshare service. Nelson confirmed it works as fast travel, and you can stay in the car for the whole trip and talk to the passenger.
- Snapmatic lets Jason and Lucia follow accounts and browse posts, but not upload. Nelson's phrase was "You just lurk."
- Holding down on the D-pad sets a waypoint quickly without opening the map.
The world around them
- Vice City streets are narrower and more realistic in scale than in earlier GTA games, with dense traffic that makes driving harder.
- NPCs have more varied heights and body shapes, and notice when players stand too close.
- There is more radio and in-game TV advertising than in any earlier GTA.
- Rockstar avoids specific political issues and memes that could date quickly.
What is not confirmed
- Rockstar has not published its own full feature list. Everything above comes from an interview and press coverage of it.
- The map size has not been given. Nelson called it "very big" and said exploration is "rewarded".
- Reports differ on whether the demo was recorded in July or August.
