GitHub announced a wide set of Copilot changes at Universe 2026. The headline is a new GitHub Copilot app aimed at what GitHub calls agentic software delivery, where AI agents do parts of the work across your repositories. This summary follows GitHub's own announcement, "GitHub Universe 2026: Evolving every layer of the stack", published October 28, 2026 by Jay Parikh. Performance numbers below are GitHub's claims, not independent results.
What GitHub announced
GitHub Copilot app
GitHub describes the app as "designed from the ground up for agentic software delivery". It connects agents and tools across projects and supports tasks such as writing specs, design discussions and telemetry analysis. The post does not give a preview or general availability status for the app itself.
Copilot projects
Copilot projects are available natively in the Copilot app "starting today". They run agent work across multiple repositories in parallel, with managed sessions.
Session continuity
You can start a cloud agent session in one place and follow the same session in the GitHub app, VS Code, the command line and on the web.
Copilot automations
Automations are AI-powered workflows that run in the cloud inside a repository. They can be triggered manually, by events or on a schedule, and GitHub gives issue triage and code review as examples. Automations can now propose improvements based on their own outcomes, which you review and approve.
Copilot Fusion
Fusion is a multi-model orchestration system that evaluates a task and decides how to run it across one or more models. GitHub reports that, on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, Fusion Max scored within two points of Opus 5.5 Max, at half the cost and 40 percent less time per task. GitHub's post does not include independent verification of these figures.
Copilot code review Max
A new tier of code review that, according to GitHub, "posted the highest F1 score on ReviewBench for high-severity issues". The existing Lite and Balanced tiers remain for everyday reviews. As with Fusion, this is a company-reported result.
Pricing and availability
- GitHub Enterprise customers can use all Copilot features, including the Copilot app, code review and automations, without buying a separate subscription. They pay for the AI credits they use.
- How to get it: available through GitHub Sales now, with self-serve "coming soon".
- Existing Copilot Business and Enterprise customers can keep their current plans or move over when ready.
- Not specified: the price of AI credits for Enterprise customers.
The infrastructure numbers
GitHub also shared how much capacity it has added so far in 2026:
| Resource | Added in 2026 |
|---|---|
| CPU cores | 4 million |
| High-speed storage | 160 PB |
| Network capacity | 50 Tb/s |
The post says a migration to a multi-region deployment in Azure is expected to finish "early next year", and describes a new Git architecture built on three principles: simplify the primitives, decouple storage from compute, and minimise coordination.
A bold prediction
Jay Parikh predicts that "all the software we've written to date" will amount to less than 1 percent of the software written in the next five years. That is a forward-looking estimate, not a measured figure.
What this means for teams
This is our reading, not GitHub's. If your team is already on GitHub Enterprise, the pricing model means trying the new Copilot features does not require a separate subscription, only credit usage, so the practical first step is to ask your administrator or GitHub Sales what the credit costs would be for your workloads. Smaller teams should wait for the self-serve option and for independent benchmarks of Fusion and code review Max before changing tools.
